New Svihelen

Clocktown Theme by Koji Kondo
5:32 / 6:41
▶︎
This song features a whimsical, almost playful melody that contrasts with the game's overall darker themes of impending doom.

After hearing of the bravery against Intellect Devourers and assistance offered to Vorrun, New Svihelen has opened its borders to offworlders. Not only that, but you've all been invited to a carnevale and masquerade ball to celebrate your contributions to the realm! Each resident of Town will receive a formal invitation card:

... before whisked away on a boat by Hoshiko and her personal fleet to ensure safe maritime travel. Hopefully, no one gets too seasick. Don't worry if the crew seems a little, uh, unsavory. They're pirates. You all know this. But that means they're willing to do whatever will get them a paycheck which right now includes the safety of Townsfolk. Don't worry! They'll take good care of you.

Probably!

Once pulled into port, offworlders are told their invitation cards will be admission into the venue once it's available. So, don't lose it! For now, the traveling carnevale is still setting up and will spend most of the days doing so. While the main event will be in the evenings, offworlders are encouraged to explore New Svihelen and it's many vendors in the meantime.

This is a massive city-state and the primary port for South Kamurkia. It shows in the hustle and bustle of the marketplace that seemingly never ends. Merchants shout out their wares and prices, bards perform on the street for coin, and no doubt you'll come across the occasional beggar. The citizens here often enjoy the convenience of having plenty of imports and business. There is some talk of a problem with classism here, but the merchants clogging the streets don’t seem to care who takes their coin.

For many from Town, this will be the first time they're able to potentially purchase more luxury goods and harder to source materials. Just be careful to watch your coin purses! Pickpockets run rampant here, it seems, and no one has much inclination to stop them. Also, you might want to work on your haggling skills or run the risk of being fleeced by local merchants seeing opportunity in fresh new faces.

(MOD NOTE: We won't keep track of funds or purchases in New Svihelen, but we ask like usual that folks do keep it reasonable! No 50-lb bags of coffee grounds or kegs of alcohol to bring back. If nothing else, a weight limit on the ferry home can be listed as reasons for why people need to be a bit more choosy with their spending.

And if you want to make sure, you can always ask us about specific items and their availability!)
THE PLOT THICKENS...

Eventually, Townsfolk will want to make their way to the City Commissioner's office. While they're being fitted by his personal tailor for their outfits, they'll also be greeted by Chief Inspector Vrock Brusseau in secret. Is it the best time for conversation? Perhaps not, but! You also can't escape his spiel and that's also kind of the point.

He explains that after hearing about the people of Town arriving, he took the opportunity to reach out to request some help with an investigation into recent suspected cult activities. He fears a resurgence of The Brotherhood of the Sky cult and wants to take the party as an opportunity to investigate.

The basic explanation is that he believes the cult is disseminating drugs into the community to vie for control in the city. They'll use this advantage to gain a foothold amongst the more affluent in New Svihelin and bolster their influence in the area. Your mission therefore is to investigate, find the dealer of the drugs, and try to find leads back to the supplier.

As you are all new faces, he hopes that you will fly under the radar so people will be more forthcoming with you. Unfortunately, your time together is up before he can say much more. And by that, we mean: He's shooed out of the Commissioner's Office once caught and called a 'quack' by the tailor. If asked about what he said, you'll be reassured it's all nonsense.

Everything is fine. Enjoy your new outfit, show it off a little, and the carnevale.

Once night rolls around and Townsfolk are ready with their invitations, they're allowed entry into the carnevale. It lines several city streets and is an overwhelming turnout. While some might take the supposed investigation to heart, others are free to just enjoy themselves. It's probably best to play the part of an unassuming attendee a little, at least, and there's plenty to do to lessen suspicion!

While not an exhaustive list, Townsfolk can find a variety of...
Games - Darts is a favorite amongst many. Ring toss, too! While there's no modern basketball hoops, there are lanes to roll large, smooth rocks down and attempt to knock things over. (All games come with the chance for a prize. Small: 2-10, Medium: 11-17, Large: 18-20. Rolling a 1 will be a loss and no prize rewarded.)

Food - Fried dough, candied apples, and a variety of drinks galore. Since its summer, most of the beverages offered are chilled. Some teenagers seem to be pranking people by putting ice cubes down their back as a result, but oh well! Kids will be kids.

Entertainment - Fire eaters, sword jugglers, and acts of magic and intrigue are a running theme. Some may even ask for volunteers to help them in their acts!

Of course, there are also things specific to this carnevale to partake in as well rather than generic funfare!
Effigy of Akkelion - A large memorial for the draconic saint Akkelion, the architect, who suffered greatly beneath the city in silence until his discovery and subsequent death. People may place offerings of flowers, coin, and food here.

Fishing - Many games involve the water of the harbor and the life that teems within. Games centering around largest catch, most caught, and so on are plentiful!

The Laughing Dragon Tavern - Draconic-themed down its food and drink, this tavern welcomes dragon-bonded especially! Drinks are on the house if you demonstrate a bit of your shared soul's power to the delight of the crowd. Anonymity helps in this case should your powers go awry.

Bohemian by Chloe Flower
5:32 / 6:41
▶︎
Blending trap beats and passionate piano, “Bohemia,” is accompanied by the release of a dazzling and provocative music video. As an homage to the iconic blockbuster "Moulin Rouge" and its 20th anniversary, Chloe's video celebrates the Oscar-winning costume design in this video.
Eventually, the main event is staged. In a large, ornate building of one of the upper echelon of New Svihelen is where the masquerade ball is being hosted. Masks are required during this part of the event... for better or worse.

Thankfully, some people are easier to tell apart than others. Keeping your identity a secret though is key in case you get caught snooping around too much.

Everyone is encouraged to drink, mingle, and find partners to dance with during the appropriate scores. It's all, on the surface, just a bit of harmless fun. However, there are a handful of individuals that players can notice acting suspicious and interrogate.

The people to question are:
⁂ Dimitri (the one with the eyepatch)
⁂ Flick the finch beastman tailor
    ⁂ Hellebore the Dwarven apothecary
⁂ Yellvis the hound beastman retiree
    ⁂ Godric the half-elf aristocrat
    ⁂ Nevin the Orc guard
    ⁂ Kellis the Tiefling refugee
⁂ Venk the fox beastman bard
⁂ Clovis the beetle beastman auctioneer
Pick one from the list and comment here to see what you may be able to learn from them. People will need to roll a d20 for information and keep rolling until they roll below an 8. Once they roll lower than that, the encounter will be over.

Groups will gain a point of advantage in these encounters for each member of the group (re-rolls). These re-rolls count for the entire encounter, not per individual roll.

(For example: Byleth rolls a 2 but is working with Elidibus. Elidibus can trigger a re-roll and, if he gets a higher number than 8, continue the encounter. Once Elidibus rolls lower than an 8 though, the encounter is over entirely for those two characters.)
Notes
⁂ If you have any questions, suggestions, or feedback relating to this post then you can leave it here!

⁂ The partner plotting post is up on the OOC community as well!

⁂ Please sign up here to interrogate an NPC and see what you figure out about this cultish mystery. We're excited to see what players might be able unearth!

⁂ Similar to the artifacts in Vorrun, these questionings are meant to spark discussion and theories among characters rather than actually answer what's going on here. We encourage those who find the artifacts to share this information ICly! All will be revealed... in due time! For now, enjoy interacting with this silly cast of individuals.

Who: Open to all Corsair characters
What: Explore an ancient graveyard
Where: A village in the lower isles
When: Late July
Note: mingling and toplevels are options for all prompts

Matt calls for a company to join him on a trip to another small village in the lower isles. During the voyage over he explains his concerns.

"The village used to be home to honorable burial grounds that the villagers maintained, but ever since the island fell, the empire has shown no interest. The village is in squalor and the graves of warriors from before the empire are unkempt."

Matt leans forward in his seat. "There's been word of possible grave robbery and angry spirits. We're going to search the graveyard for answers and try to sooth any ghosts."

Who: Emery and whoever takes the time to help out.
What: Gathering medical supplies.
When: Mid-late July.
Where: Various points across Esthere.

Anyone who responds to Emery's request for medical supplies has various options in how they might help out. Some might prefer to gather medicinal plants, whether it's from the gardens and fields of the Corsairs' various settlements, or perhaps the bolder sorts will dare to venture out into the wilds of Innistis and Larendt. There's environmental hazards to contend with, as well as the Imperial forces to deal with, who are more alert than ever thanks to the ongoing war over the Fallen Isles.

Some might choose to focus on processing gathered plants, turning them into proper medicine to greater increase their efficacy. There's also other things that need to be made, so one might try their hand at stitching together masks and blankets, making soap, creating shelf stable rations... Whatever someone thinks may be useful.

And even if you're not the handy sort, one can always simply go shopping at various markets around Elysium or in Corsair settlements. Store-bought is fine and all that. The more piratical may also try a bit of theft, as there are certainly Imperial ships, stores, and encampments that won't miss a few supplies.

Whatever anyone who volunteers decides to do, they'll always be able to find Emery in that promised clearing near Elysium, playing his lyre and awaiting supplies.

[ooc: I'll be putting a top level up for Emery later, but this log is intended to be a work-amongst-yourselves affair, so feel free to put up your own top levels for other people to tag. Hopefully, the above blurb will give y'all some ideas for prompts, and you are of course free to come up with ideas of your own for this plot.]

[Behold, there is an unexpected pretty blonde face on the network! Where did Emery get an ENC.]

Hey folks! I want to thank everyone who helped me out with that Python issue recently. You Corsairs are really an impressive bunch. And in light of that, I've got another favor to ask.

You see, I'm in need of some medical supplies. Mostly medicines, I'll list 'em out in a sec, but other things like soap, disinfectants, face masks, honey, tea, potable water... Anything you might need for nursing a sick person. And for the medicine I need-

[And then Emery names a bunch of different herbs/medications. Anyone with a decent amount of pharmaceutical knowledge should pick up on it being stuff used for the treatment of respiratory ailments. Pain relievers, cough suppressants, decongestants, that sort of thing.]

Medicine that's already prepared would be ideal but I have enough apothecary knowledge to make use of raw ingredients. As for how much I need, the answer is “As much as you can spare.”

[His sunny smile briefly shifts into a grimace.]

I'm aware the timing isn't great, but that's how it works out sometimes, isn't it? Still, I'm willing to compensate anyone who brings me something. There's a clearing in the woods up the hills to the East of Elysium, where you'll be able to find me most evenings. Just keep an ear out for the sound of my lyre.

[Spoiler alert: Despite Emery's words about compensation, anyone who bothers to ask for money is going to be grossly underpaid. In Emery's defense, the money he's earning from working as a traveling bard/healer isn't much. For all the nonchalance, Emery is deeply aware he's relying mainly on the goodwill of the Corsairs.]

[ooc: The action post is here.]
